Shradh & Ancestral Rites: Traditions, Vidhi & Significance
The word 'Shradh' derives from 'Shraddha'—unconditional faith, reverence, and gratitude. In Vedic philosophy, performing Shradh and Tarpan is a sacred moral duty towards departed parents and ancestors (Pitrus), expressing gratitude for the life and values they bestowed.
The Philosophy of Pitru Rina (Ancestral Debt)
Every human is born with three fundamental spiritual debts: Deva Rina (to the gods), Rishi Rina (to the sages), and Pitru Rina (to ancestors). Performing annual Shradh and offering Tarpan releases the Karta from this ancestral debt and invites harmony upon descendants.
Key Elements of the Shradh Ritual
- Hawan (Deva Puja): Invoking Agni to carry sacred offerings to the ancestral realms.
- Pind Daan: Offering cooked rice balls mixed with black sesame, ghee, and honey symbolizing nourishment.
- Tarpan: Offering holy water infused with Kusha grass and sesame to quench spiritual thirst.
- Brahmana Bhojan & Daan: Feeding learned Vedic Purohits and donating clothes/essentials.
- Panchabali: Feeding cows, crows, dogs, ants, and birds as universal service.
